A Systemic, Depth-Oriented Approach

Karen’s approach to clinical consultation is systemic, relational, and experiential, helping clinicians move beyond surface-level interventions to understand the deeper patterns shaping client experiences.

Her work is grounded in:

The Satir Model (Family Systems Therapy)

Drawing from the Satir model, consultation focuses on understanding how family systems, communication patterns, and internal experiences shape behaviour and emotional responses.

For counsellors, this means learning to:

  • Identify and work with relational dynamics and communication styles

  • Support clients in building self-esteem, congruence, and authenticity

  • Navigate complex family and school systems with greater clarity and confidence

This approach is especially valuable for school counsellors, who regularly work within layered systems involving students, families, educators, and administration.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Karen also integrates Internal Family Systems (IFS), a powerful, evidence-informed approach that helps clinicians understand the “parts” within each person.

Through IFS-informed consultation, clinicians learn to:

  • Recognize and work with protective and vulnerable parts in clients

  • Support clients in developing a stronger, more compassionate core Self

  • Approach challenging behaviours (e.g., anger, avoidance, anxiety) with curiosity rather than judgment

  • Deepen trauma-informed practice in a structured, effective way

IFS is particularly helpful for clinicians wanting to move beyond symptom management and into transformational, lasting change with their clients.

Supporting Growth at Every Stage

Whether you are new to the field or an experienced practitioner, Karen’s consultation services are designed to help you:

  • Build clinical confidence and competence

  • Deepen your case conceptualization skills

  • Navigate ethical and professional challenges

  • Prevent burnout through reflective, supportive practice

  • Develop a more intentional and impactful therapeutic presence

Clinical Supervision for School Counsellors

With her long-standing experience in school settings, Karen has a special interest in supporting school counsellors seeking supervision in BC. She understands the unique challenges of working in schools, including:

  • Balancing clinical and educational roles

  • Supporting students with diverse and complex needs

  • Navigating systems, policies, and multidisciplinary teams

  • Managing high caseloads and limited resources

Her supervision provides a space to reflect, problem-solve, and grow within the realities of school-based practice.
